Niels Pinkwart studierte Informatik und Mathematik im Lehramtsstudiengang an der Universität Duisburg. Hier promovierte er auch im Jahr 2005 mit einer Dissertation über kollaborative Modellierungssysteme in Bildungskontexten. Nach einer Postdoc-Stelle am Human-Computer Interaction Institute der Carnegie Mellon University nahm er Rufe auf eine Juniorprofessur und nachfolgend auf eine reguläre Professur an der Technischen Universität Clausthal an. Seit 2013 ist er an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin als Leiter des Lehrstuhls "Didaktik der Informatik / Informatik und Gesellschaft" tätig. Seine Forschungsinteressen liegen im Schnittbereich von Digitalisierung, Bildung und gesellschaftlich/organisationalem Wandel.
 
Neben seiner Tätigkeit an der HU Berlin ist Prof. Pinkwart als wissenschaftlicher Direktor des Educational Technology Lab am DFKI Berlin aktiv. Innerhalb der Gesellschaft für Informatik ist Prof. Pinkwart derzeit Mitglied des Lenkungsausschusses der Fachgruppe Bildungstechnologien.
 
Prof. Pinkwart ist durch mehr als 300 Publikationen sowie zahlreiche Forschungsprojekte mit Förderung u.a. von DFG, BMBF, BMAS und Stiftungen wissenschaftlich ausgewiesen. Er ist Mitglied von Programmkomitees verschiedener wissenschaftlicher Konferenzen und derzeit Associate Editor des International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education und Mitglied des Editorial Boards des Journal of Educational Data Mining.
 
Seit Oktober 2021 ist Prof. Pinkwart Vizepräsident für Lehre und Studium der HU Berlin. Sein Lehrstuhl wird derzeit von Prof. Raphael Zender geleitet.
