Niels Pinkwart studied Computer Science and Mathematics at the University of Duisburg from 1995 to 1999. As part of the COLLIDE research team at the University of Duisburg-Essen, he completed his PhD studies in 2005 with a dissertation on collaborative educational modeling systems. After a post-doctoral position at the Human-Computer Interaction Institute of Carnegie Mellon University (2005/2006), he accepted offers for Assistant Professor and Associate Professor positions at Clausthal University of Technology. In 2013, he moved to Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin where he heads the research group "Computer Science Education / Computer Science and Society", the ProMINT Kolleg and the center of technology enhanced learning located in the Professional School of Education of HU Berlin.

In addition to his activities at HU Berlin, Prof. Pinkwart acts as Principal Investigator at the Einstein Center Digital Future and at the Weizenbaum Institute for the networked society (German Internet Institute). Within the German Computer Science Association, Prof. Pinkwart is currently co-chair of the working group on Learning Analytics and member of the steering committee of the section on educational technologies. 

The professional activities of Prof. Pinkwart include participating in the program committees of a variety of scientific conferences, including the International Conference on Intelligent Tutoring Systems, the International Conference on Artificial Intelligence in Education, the International Conference on Computer Supported Education, the eLearning conference of the German Computer Science Association, the IEEE International Conference on Advanced Learning Technologies, the International Conference on Learning Analytics & Knowledge, the CRIWG Conference on Collaboration and Technology, and others. Prof. Pinkwart also serves as a reviewer for several journals and is editorial board member of the International Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Education.

Prof. Pinkwart serves on scientific advisory boards of several projects and organizations, including the Konrad Zuse Computermuseum Hoyerswerda, the Start Coding initiative, the KES Verbund Arbeit und Leben Berlin, and several eLearning projects conducted at SGM Solutions & Global Media GmbH.
