Abstract:

Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) play an important role in numerous applications. The ability to estimate the position of a user became an important feature. However, there are still areas, where GNSSs are not available. In urban canyons GNSSs have reduced precision and indoors they are not available at all. Due to the complexity of the GNSS receivers, they are not useful in systems which should be kept as simple as possible, like wireless sensor networks.

In this work, the main focus is on ranging and localization systems which are intended to be used indoors. Several approaches for simplifying the ranging and localization algorithms are proposed. These approaches are computationally not intensive, making them suitable for low complexity embedded systems.

Results of an implementation of ranging and localization algorithms in the 2.4/5 GHz (WLAN) band are presented. In the 60 GHz frequency band, combined high-speed data transfer and high precision ranging is implemented. The results show that precisions down to 1 cm are possible.
