OMX Ware: The World’s Largest Data Collection of Microbial Life

Thousands of genetic sequence files are made available every day through public websites such as the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) and the Sequence Read Archive (SRA). Such data is critical for many uses, such as to understand  the genetic underpinnings of anti-bacterial resistance and to identify the sources of food borne illness. Microbiologists and bio-informaticians using this data for analysis have typically relied on ad-hoc, file-based programming, making it difficult to compute analytics in the aggregate. 

In this talk, I will give an overview OMX Ware, a data warehouse containing genetic information for over 165,000 microbes. To our knowledge, it is the largest structured and queryable data collection of microbial life.


Mary Roth is a Principal Research Staff Member and Manager at IBM Research Almaden. She has earned the title of Distinguished Engineer, a title reserved for the top 2% of IBM's technical population. Mary is an expert in data integration, data governance and query optimization. Her ideas and leadership have resulted in 4 concept-to-product launches, include DB2 Federated Server, InfoSphere Data Architect, InfoSphere FastTrack and the Information Server Unified Governance Platform.  In addition, she has a broad patent portfolio and publication record, and has taught at leading universities.  In her current role, she is the technical lead for OMX Ware, leading a cross-disciplinary team of computer scientists and microbiologists to create the world's largest structured data collection of microbial life  to classify, query and analyze bacterial life by function.
