We have two open research positions in the area of event stream processing and workflows for interactive exploration of scientific data. The positions are paid according to TVL-E13 (roughly 4100 – 4500 Euro before tax, depending on prior experiences). They are open from the earliest possible start date on and will be funded until 30.6.2024. Our prime interest is to find highly motivated PhD students, but applications from PostDocs are also eligible.

 

FONDA

The positions are part of the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Center FONDA – Foundations of Workflows for Large-Scale Scientific Data Analysis. In this project, more than 50 researchers will jointly research innovative infrastructures for the large-scale analysis of scientific data sets. The CRC is highly interdisciplinary, embracing especially software engineering, distributed systems, algorithm engineering, data science, databases, bioinformatics, biomedical image analysis, material science, and satellite-based remote sensing. It centers on the concept of data analysis workflows (DAW), and aims to research new approaches to enhance DAW portability, adaptability, and dependability, by developing new languages, optimization techniques, provenance analysis algorithms, workflow compilers, and other components of distributed resource management systems.

FONDA is a joint project of all Berlin universities and various other research institutions. FONDA will be funded for four years, with the possibility of further extensions. It is situated in Berlin, the capital of Germany. Over the last years, Berlin has developed into an international highly attractive city, both for working and living, with a very rich and intertwined network of high profile research organizations and universities.

 

The positions

Position in FONDA subproject A1.

This position is dedicated to the discovery of event queries over streams of provenance data that are collected during the execution of data analysis workflows (DAWs). These queries shall separate runs that succeeded from those that fail, thereby enabling efficient and effective validation. The PhD student will develop algorithms for the discovery of event queries (see prior work on the IL-Miner), including schemes for parallel and approximate discovery. Moreover, the student will devise mechanisms to select a subset of discovered queries for effective validation of DAW execution. Focusing on the algorithmic perspective, the student will work closely with the second PhD student in this subproject, who focuses on the complexity of the discovery problem and who is supervised by Prof. Schweikardt, also at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.

Position in FONDA subproject A6

This position is dedicated to models and algorithms for exploratory data analysis workflows (DAWs), especially for the analysis of large-scale genomic data. The PhD student will develop a generic model of an exploratory DAW, including exploration primitives, dependencies between exploration options, and strategies for following these options. The student will further ground this model in an actual execution infrastructure and devise mechanisms for interactive exploration of the workflow execution. While this position is located in the research group led by Matthias Weidlich, the student will work closely with the PhD student in this subproject, who is based in the research group of Dr. Kehr at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin.

 

Requirements

  • (Very) good Diploma or Master in Computer Science, or equivalent qualification
  • Good knowledge in at least one of the following areas: databases, distributed systems, software engineering, formal methods, statistical data analysis
  • For A6, prior knowledge on scientific workflows or on analysis of genome data is an advantage, but not required
  • Strong experience in programming, preferably in teams
  • Ambition to pursue high-profile research and in pursuing a PhD (if applicable)
  • Strong interest in interdisciplinary research
  • Fluent English, very good communication skills
