Raphael Zender studied Information Technology / Computer Engineering at the University of Rostock from 2001 to 2007. As part of the DFG graduate school MuSAMA (Multimodal Smart Appliance Ensembles for Mobile Applications), he completed his PhD in 2011 on the topic of "Service-based Infrastructure for Pervasive Teaching and Learning Arrangements", also at the University of Rostock. Afterwards, he changed to the University of Potsdam in order to help establishing the chair for Complex Multimedia Application Systems until September 2021 and to perform various tasks in teaching and research there.  Among other things, he led the virtual and augmented reality (VR/AR)-related research projects at the chair.  He is also deputy spokesperson of the Educational Technologies Group of the German Informatics Society (GI) and initiator of the GI working group VR/AR-Learning.

Since October 2021, he leads the chair of Didactics of Computer Science | Informatics and Society at the Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin.
